What is an Ocular Migraine & its causes? - Dr. Sriram Ramalingam

Migraine as usually everyone is aware of is a headache, is a one sided headache. Occasionally this headache may be preceded by some eye symptoms called as aura. These aura may be like flashing of light or floating of objects in front of the eye. Once these symptoms decreases, it may be followed by headache. Occasionally a person may complain of decrease in vision in one eye. This may last for a period of half an hour to one hour. This vision decrease subsides and may be followed by headache. This is called as ocular migraine. We cannot label all decrease in vision in one eye as ocular migraine. One has to rule out other causes before we label a person as ocular migraine. The cause for sudden decrease in vision may not always be ocular migraine. There may be other conditions called as amaurosis fugax where there is sudden loss of vision because of blood vessel abnormalities, persons who are drug abused. Persons who have other abnormalities called as sickle cell diseases or maybe a spasm of the blood vessels. Ladies are more affected than the male members.
