How formal clothes can impact our psychology

What we wear can be a form of self-expression, but how much do your clothes reveal about you? A recent study finds that wearing formal clothing can actually enhance your ability to think abstractly. Heidi Grant Halvorson, social psychologist and author of “No One Understands You and What To Do About It,” joins “CBS This Morning” to discuss the study.

this is VERY TRUE. I usually stammer now and then and get nervous whilst speaking to others, but when I wear a simple business shirt I'm more confident and speak fluently...

Definitely this is a A FACT!
I had to look into the science behind this even though I’ve never heard of anyone talk about this or heard of any studies but I knew there just had to be. I’ve been aware for years how I have different phycological patterns when in different types of clothing. I’m not a person of one style but probably the most diverse person I’ve ever seen when it comes to what I wear.

When I wear business attire- I DEFINITELY feel more confident and powerful

When I wear colorful and childlike clothing such as a tutu and fairywings I act more like a kid and am very playful and skip around like a 7 year old girl would.

When I wear workout clothes I’m ready to hit the gym and get more energized to do productive things.

When I wore a white coat at an old job I worked I did infact feel more clear in mind and mature.

When I wear heels (which I always prefer to- I always say “I feel like myself”) people never understand it but it’s the feeling internally I get while wearing heels. I feel more confident and as a model I feel more like one as well. Confidence rises with heels vs wearing slides for me makes me feel 🫤👎.

I wore slides today & my partners clothes because I stayed over at his place and didn’t have any clean clothes for the next day and all day I felt so low. (I was wearing his sweats & a tee) Like just not as confident more head down vibes and just awful. On top of that I was wearing slides (not that they are bad in themselves just how they make me personally feel) I’m usually a VERY social person and not shy at all, extremely outgoing and an extravert but I just felt so bad ESPECIALLY in public. & I know it was all due to what I was wearing..

CraY how clothes affect our mood, performance, and thought patterns but they definitely do!

The study that showd wearing formal clothes helped people think more abstractly and feel more confident proves the subtle point ive tred to make over on my channel, what you wear has a large affect on you! Not only that but also how people feel towards us and even our work productivity. Ive noticed this in my own life when i put on an outfit in the morning im much more productve than when i stay in my oajamas all day long.

It's not only about cutting out the decision making process and how it uses mentla resources, but also associating yourself with established symbols that your mind unconsciously connected to that specific outfit. Steve Jobs for example, surely felt as 'dressed perfectly' when using what he decided represented his personality the best. It's also about what we associate with the outfit

I feel worse in most office clothes. Too much polyester feels stifling and they often lack the feminine details I need to look properly put together. A rayon wrap blouse/dress, something with lace or a more breathable pant like linen, cotton twill works for me though. I think it's a little more subjective but the decision fatigue thing is absolutely true.

How are painters not associated with being focused on details?

I raised this doubt in my work psychology class in 2008. Nice to see this video.

Stop with personal jokes and comments and let the woman in Black dress speak as it's information we seek by watching this video

Dressing formal makes me feel the exact opposite. Feel nervous, uncomfortable, less confiendent. Formal wear is awful. I hate it.

Attentive to details from a doctor vs painter? Obviously never ask the question about art to a conservator... well, not to discriminate. It's a matter of the big 5's type of profile.

I would like to dress more formal, but I cannot afford to do so at this time.

That's all associated meaning, which is subjective! IT folks are always in casuals & are complex thinkers & great problem-solvers!

I feel good when I am wearing white clothes than other colors. I feel awful with black clothes and I don’t feel comfortable at all. Feel so warm and look too old.

The fact that your clothing makes you feel more confident is honestly so crazy lol. You should be confident in yourself instead of relying on externalities, but I guess it goes to show that human beings are more shallow than they’d like to let on.

Wearing a suit and tie is so uncomfortable. I prefer to be comfortable and still look presentable. I would dress in Bermuda or nice Jean shorts and a polo, a silk shirt, or a fishing shirt with keens sandals in the summer as an engineer.

What about a guy wearing red shoes? I hate that. My fiancé wants to wear them to our wedding.☹️

This is all fun, but you can throw those studies right out of the window for socially anxious or depressed people 🙃

I was described that when I wear formal clothing, the light from my eyes fades away and I become more blunt and forward. Sometimes I feel like the suit is like Venom in a sense. It changes the person the longer they wear it.

I don't agree at all. I've had jobs where I've had to dress up and never felt more uncomfortable, out of place, and stupid. That's just me though. I've never felt comfortable dressing up. Im very focused on my health and education, but clothing and the "trends" and social norms I don't buy into. I think the way you carry yourself, the way you speak, your body language, your physique, your own self efficacy and confidence in yourself, and more importantly What comes out of your mouth is more influential than a suit.

Mr. Rose knew that well, when he paraded in a robe or underwear in front of female colleagues. Quite an effect!
