During the last few years of the 70s and the first few years of the 80s, Nastassja Kinski's face adorned films and magazine covers. She seemed to be the face of her time, especially after the release of Roman Polanski's 'Tess' in 1980. It was a shame that, 'Tess' aside her films were rarely as iconic as she was. Not that they were bad... films. Her first role in Wim Wenders 'Wrong Movement' and then Hammer's final horror film 'To the Devil a Daughter' were both excellent film. Her films following 'Tess', like Paul Schrader's remake of 'Cat People', Francis Ford Coppola's 'One From the Heart', Jean-Jacques Beineix's 'The Moon in the Gutter' and James Toback's 'Exposed' are among the most brilliant films of the early 80s. They weren't widely regarded as such at the time. It wasn't until Wim Wender's cast her again in 'Paris Texas' that she was once more seen as a credible movie star.

She is still working and for me, as for many others, she remains one of the most unique and sensitive actresses. It is hard to believe that she is the daughter of Klaus Kinski but she has that same indefinable kind of talent. Something about the way, when she feels emotion on camera, it is hard not to be caught in exactly the same emotion.

It was my initial intention to make a retrospective of moments from her career, but in these few shots from the film ' Stay As You Are' (Così come sei) directed by Alberto Lattuada and starring Marcello Mastroianni , there is a colour and a mood that perfectly captures the tone that was established throughout her career. The film itself might not be one that most would seek out, but the moments that aren't primarily dealing with the May/September love affair (which can be difficult to watch), are so beautiful. The locations, the lighting and the cast... are all amazing.
