Why I Installed a Larger Battery in my Honda

Welcome to my channel where I show you how to make your cars last 25 years. In this video I talk about why I upgraded to a larger battery in my Honda. The Group 35 is about 40% larger than the Group 51R it replaces.

I just slapped a larger battery into my acura rsx. Fit like a glove after I took out the original plastic tray.

Went from a 51r to 35 on my 2003 Accord LX for the same reason. Car now cranks up quickly. Also went from 1 year with the 51r to almost 3 years with a 35 AGM. Right now has an Odyssey performance 35 AGM, and has been working great! This should be standard for everyone with a 4 cylinder 7th gen.

It won't damage the vehicle if u install a larger capacity & cca battery. It will only be better for the vehicle u would have less stress on the starter in cold weather with higher cca battery. Same goes with amp hr. Do not worry get the largest u can that fits in the battery tray and u are good to go..

I did this on my GFs Accord. Her car needed a new battery and I had a deep cycle battery sitting in my garage, I was able to install it with a few minor modifications. She's been running with that battery for a little over 2 years and it has not caused any issues. The engine cranks up right away even with the cold weather we're having here.

I replaced my 51R to 24F battery in my 2017 Accord. The 24F is used in the V6 Accord. Purchased the V6 battery tray and upper mounting plate from the dealer. I was able to re-use the stock J-bolts.

Another common upgrade is to use the 24F battery that Honda uses for their 6-cylinder vehicles.

Honda did have group 35 as standard in CRV for Canadian market compare to 51R in USA, except it only have a CCA of 450, struggle to start after 5 years in Quebec cold winter, eventually have to replace it with a Costco kirkland 650 CCA group 35

Size 24f is the biggest size battery will also fit

My 2015 Accord battery is only 410 CCA which is pretty low. As long as it’s 12V, I’ve read that CCA doesn’t matter at all. In fact, in (extreme) circumstances, you’d only appreciate higher CCA batteries. Your car will only take what it needs.
My OEM battery did last me 5+ years, but I think I’ve only driven maybe 4k miles in the past 3 since my mom gave it to me.

I plan on getting a 24F group battery as my next one

I went for a refurbished motomaster 24f 650cca for 55 cad$ at the local Kenny U-Pull. 55 bucks for a 2019 battery, not bad, my 51r couldnt crank my k24 tsx 2009 anymore

Okay, this note made my fall off my chair!!! Found that Honda's PDI (pre-delivery inspection) procedures include a NOTE: stating that due to parasitic draw these 2 fuses are removed during delivery and stored in the glovebox. So it is expected that there should be some draw...but should it be almost 1 amp?
Disconnected the negative battery cable and bridged the gap with a multimeter and saw a parasitic draw of 0.8-0.9 amps. From what I understand, this is too much and will eventually kill the battery. Just did this today so waiting to see if it's dead tomorrow morning or check the battery voltage.
4. I pulled fuses until I could isolate the parasitic draw and found it to be the 2 - 10amp fuses for the Backup Main and Audio. Both had parasitic draw of about 0.4-0.5amps, adding up to about 1amp total
So I'm interested in any feedback on this matter but specifically wondering a couple things...
1. Does anyone also have parasitic draws of this much? And from the Backup Main and Audio systems?
2. I tried to search this issue and didn't come up with much. Some Honda models are having problems with the battery called a parasitic drain. Batteries that have a parasitic drain continue to drain power as the vehicle is left unattended/parked. Feb 7, 2023

Fit the biggest battery you can fit. I went from a DIN66H to a DIN77H and I get easier starts in cold weather and lo get life. Ma, es a big difference on a Diesel.

But why does so many people even replace a bigger battery tray for? When i upgrade the OE 51R battery to group 35 battery i did not replace a bigger battery tray but instead still use the original battery tray. Still fits but just a bit tight..
