Known as the Wonder of the West, Mont Saint-Michel looks as if it could have been plucked from a fairytale. The religious sanctuary on France's Normandy coast turns 1,000 this year. Since the first stone was laid in 1023, it has been home to monks, monarchs and prisoners; a historic pilgrimage site that welcomes 3 million visitors each year. In this edition we meet some of the people who preserve its magic.

What i find sad is that everywhere would have been this beautiful way back then .instead of horrible steel and glass bores

Very well done. I didn’t know there were still monks and nuns there. I think a visit at Christmas would be wonderful.

Thanks for “clearing up” the Normandy/Brittany debate! Good to know I was not the only one confused about that.

1000 years old. Much younger than the Pyramids of Egypt and obviously much smaller than the oldest Great Wall of China. Mount St Michel is a medieval French version of the Acropolis in Athens.
