Back in 1978, you didn't watch Superman for the fight scenes. Instead, you were amazed that Chris Reeve really made you believe a man could fly while holding Lois Lane in one arm and a helicopter in the other. Not to mention becoming using your body as a train track, replace an airplane engine, and chasing rockets.

I love how this movie had no fights. Thats something i wish movies would do these days, focus on the character.

I really appreciate how you completely glossed over the fact that it has quite possibly the greatest opening credits sequence in film history, courtesy of the great John Williams

Almost 40 years and that Lois Lane influenced death scream before he turns back time STILL goes right through me and gives me a shiver!!!

I remember being a little kid and hearing that scream and being like "OH DAMN!"
Also, yeah Superman is what we SHOULD WANT to be, NOT a mirror for what we are.

@your daughter, tell her that last bit was wrong.
Superman IS supposed to reflect what we wish Society could/should be and NOT what society actually is.
Batman is meant to reflect what society actually is.

I rewatched Superman last night and no one can hold a candle to Christopher Reeve's portrayal. Even though Henry Caville is my generation's Superman, Reeve is always Superman to me. He was kind, generous, and courageous without being flat or two dimensional. He was a nuanced character without any dark side. He defeated bad guys, but he got a cat out of a tree without it feeling like a cliché because he liked helping everyone. He had sass without being cruel, and was a chivalrous charmer. We will never see a Superman like that again. It should have been untouched

"Should reflect society for what it is..."
Yeah, because god forbid our superheroes and Star Trek films should inspire us and make us want to strive for a better world for everyone. They should be dark and bleak because hope and idealism is for losers.

Still love this movie. Christopher Reeve was a very charming superman and very loveable Clark Kent.

In the case of this movie, I don't think the origin story is unnecessary, firstly because let's face it it's the best Superman origin story put to film, and secondly because the emotional and thematic conflicts of that story pay off at the climax, and it's one of the few superhero movie origin stories that does something like that and does it so well.

i've just realized now that superman 1978 does feel more realistic than any other superhero movies. why? supervillains doesn't always attack the world, it's also showing that superman did something for society instead of punching through buildings and being moody.

The Lois bit killed me, I can't stop laughing at the "what kind of story is she working on?" and the insane rhyming monologue lmao
