I is life at the extreme and we wouldn't have it any other way.

It's been only some years since lightweight materials like carbon fibre have been used so extensively in boat building, so there's certainly room for improvement. I think they will capitalise on the experiences they've had and in some near future we will have super lightweight, super fast and super reliable boats.
It's much like cars: up to the 1970s they were still pretty unreliable, despite 70 years of developement.
Each new technology takes time to develop to near perfection.

I think Chris Nicholson summed it up best. Yes there have been a lot of breakages but the boats have remained safe

Question, why don't they make the mast in two or three pieces like a fishing rod instead of one giant piece?

Well being a Cantilever beam your would have figured the mast would have failed at the base rather in middle like it did. So my argument is since it is failing in the middle any way you might as well build in two pieces.

to make a mast in three parts you have to over engineer the joint sections as these are weak points. however if one whole section the whole structure is one and there are not weak points.

Those were the most politically-correct answers I've seen anywhere in a long time :)
I get why though! Who's going to bad-mouth the etc?
If they got through w/out a scratch, it wouldn't nearly make for as dramatic footage.

Safe? yes, or just plain lucky?

They do seem to aproach GROUP B rally car status...
to much BHP to handle?

the only way to decrease brakage is to power down...
not adding weight...
