The Suicide Squad is a 2021 superhero comedy film based on the DC Comics team of the same name. Co-produced by DC Films, Atlas Entertainment, and the The Safran Company and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film is a sequel to Suicide Squad. It is the tenth installment in the DC Extended Universe. The film was released on August 5, 2021 in theaters and on Max.

The film is directed by James Gunn and stars Margot Robbie as Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn, Idris Elba as Robert DuBois/Bloodsport, John Cena as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, Joel Kinnaman as Colonel Rick Flag, Sylvester Stallone as the voice of Nanaue/King Shark, Viola Davis as Director Amanda Waller, David Dastmalchian as Abner Krill/Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Cleo Cazo/Ratcatcher 2, Jai Courtney as George "Digger" Harkness/Captain Boomerang, Peter Capaldi as Dr. Gaius Grieves/Thinker, Michael Rooker as Brian Durlin/Savant, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, and Pete Davidson as Richard Hertz/Blackguard.

The film is humorously split into ten chapters that appear blended into the characters' surroundings in different ways: "3 Days Earlier", "Now", "Meanwhile, Harley", "Bring Me the Heads of the Suicide Squad", "Operation: Jotunheim", "Operation: Harley", "Jotunheim", "Dirty Little Secrets", "8 Minutes Earlier", and "Suicide Squad vs. Starro the Conqueror".

Welcome to hell — a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin, and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.

Starro the Conqueror, or simply Starro, was a gigantic, starfish-like extraterrestrial that was captured and imprisoned in Jotunheim on Corto Maltese and the primary subject of Project Starfish. During its imprisoned years, Starro was tortured by the hyper-intelligent scientist Gaius Grieves. After it was targeted for termination by Task Force X, it went on a rampage across the city of Valle Del Mar, using its girth and mind-controlling spores to cause havoc. In response, Task Force X confronted Starro ending with its death at the hands of an army of rats.

Starro claimed to have lived a happy life floating in outer space, staring at the stars, planets and constellations. It eventually floated near the Earth, being discovered by American astronauts from the NASA in 1990, near the end of the Cold War. Surprised by their discovery, the astronauts brought it inside the space shuttle, scared, it released several spores of itself, attaching themselves to the astronauts and controlling their minds who looked towards the camera where Starro was filmed. However, a sole surviving astronaut was able to get it to Earth.[1]

It was ultimately contained and brought to Earth, where the United States government, hoping to weaponize it, made a deal with the government of Corto Maltese to imprison and conduct experiments on it entitled "Project Starfish" in Jotunheim, where it was experimented on by geneticist Gaius Grieves, who dubbed him "Starro the Conqueror". For a full 30 years, Thinker took it upon himself to physically, sexually and mentally torture and abuse Starro, which he claimed were necessary for scientific advancement.[1]

Grieves conducted multiple experiments that involved acts such as forcing it to generate multiple spores that controlled journalists, political rivals of the Herrera family, and their loved ones, who were similarly tortured and killed by the spores. Starro would begin to generate a hatred against Grieves considering him mentally ill. Eventually, the population of Corto Maltese began to create rumors of a beast that was guarding at the Jotunheim base.[1]

I like how Starro looks Goofy in this movie, but all of the characters play it straight instead of them cracking jokes about how goofy he looks. It should be goofy to us and very real to them.

The reason why Starro works is that while he LOOKS silly, what he DOES is violent and horrifying. It forces us to take him seriously, even as we're laughing at the funny way he jiggles when he walks.

First guy: ‘James take on starro was very original’
James: ‘ripped it straight from the comics, didn’t need to change much’

"I was happy up there. Looking at the stars..."
That goofy-looking monster that needed to the taken out broke my heart with that line.

I Like how different James Gunn and Zack Snyder’s movies are.

One makes some cool, colourful movies that don’t take theirselves seriously,

and the other who makes awesome, gritty, and darker toned superhero movies.

Both of them are great filmmakers that just have very different styles of filmmaking.

This is why Gunn is going to work - he knows how to understand and take the silliness of the comics and translate well into film.
He can do serious and can show the colourful nature of DC comics too. Very excited for his work.

I’m so happy DC is going to be leaning into the comics more rather than going for gritty going forward. Gritty can work for some stories, but like 99% of the stories would be Batman in DC, and even then Batman can still be just as bright depending on what villains and heroes you use (since they said they’ll be using Damian Wayne, I can imagine seeing some appearances from Nightwing and maybe another member of the bat family).

Just seeing the Superman trailer, and how colourful and well designed everything was, filled me with excitement for what DC has going forward. It’s about damn time we didn’t have an overly gritty Superman.

I love how Starro had his original color scheme since dangerous animals are often bright colored anyway

‘woah it was such an original take!’
The director: ‘I just actually used the comics instead of doing my own thing and altering the source’

Starro looks stupid and ridiculous to we humans but it's 100% terrifying when it opens anything on it's body and likely frightening to things afraid of it's coloring.

Also having one giant centeal eye is helping the ridiculous but terrifying stuff.

And this is why gunn gets it. Hes not embarrassed of the source material like a lot of cape movies are. I have the utmost faith in him because of this

Fun fact: Starro was the first villain in the comics that The Justice League defeated.

People need to realize that having goofy humor in your superhero movie isn’t ‘copying marvel’, it’s literally just being faithful to the comics. The comics are goofy as hell while simultaneously dealing with serious topics, and the MCU sure as hell didn’t invent that. Before Christian bale, there was Adam west.

I hope they find a way to bring back Starro in the DCU. I’d love to see the justice league take him on!

i loved how Starro would roll over onto his other legs and then use those to walk without any sort of pause just super natural
