Im a newbie nurse. I havent got much training as a student on blood taking. Usually the doctor/nurse would do it when im at my clinicals as students takes too much time and patients were not willing to let us try on them. Now, as an official nurse, i keep making mistakes to the point where patients would specifically request not to have me take their blood. As a result, my manager kept scolding me and belittle me. Weeks of sleepless nights watching videos like this, palpating veins on basically everyone i met, sneaking out syringe and needles to try out on my plushies at home, now everyone looks for me if they cant draw out blood. Even doctors would ask me if they cant because for some reason, i always managed to successfully draw out blood. Practice do makes perfect.

great vid :) but dont forget to
1. instruct the patient to put pressure on the site post blood draw for five minutes (even if the bleeding has stopped to prevent haematoma)
2. To invert (not shake) the vials 7-8 times as soon as you've completed the draw to activate the non coagulation factors in the tube.

watching this in 2016..there are lots of mistakes in the SOP, order of draw and when to release and put tourniquet again..but your hands are really good and steady..review your SOP once again and order of draw because it is very important and should not be ignored.

For the cleaning, I was taught that we should clean from inner to outward.

Kept looking for you to mix the blood with the additives in the tubes by rotating them.

2 call outs. 1. You're not to cross over the patient. So if you're right handed then your supplies should be on your left side. The right hand holds the needle and the left changes the tubes, also the tubes were not drawn in the correct order of draw.

I was super nervous when I went to get my blood drawn because I had a horrible experience last time I had it done. But the phlebotomist was super good and I didn’t even feel the needle. Now I’m not even nervous to go again in 3 months. It was my first time in about 10 years so my doctor wants a sort of base line so he ordered two pretty close together.

Aren’t we supposed to leave the tourniquets no more than 1 min to avoid pre analytical errors? You applied the tourniquet at 2:16 and removed at 4:44.

The order of draw is incorrect in this video. Correct order of draw would be light blue first, then gold, then lavender.

Have this in my osce tomorrow, so this is great to refresh the steps!

I guess you should observe correct order of Draw first Blood Culture (Yellow) - Coagulation Tube (Light Blue) - EDTA tube (Lavender). And I was taught that at the last tube, you should first remove the tourniquet then the tube followed by the Adaptor.

I think cleaning the area must be concentric. Inside to outside.in circular motion to avoid the contamination of the puncture area

Great video, but why do you change hands once you inserted the needle (from right to left)? Under no circumstances pathology collector allowed to change hands, cross under/over patient's arm. In general, you hold the barrel with your dominant hand and insert/change tubes with your non-dominant hand without crossing over.
