That isn’t a “smart business” it’s a scam because the people purchasing think they are saving the turtles when in reality they’ll just be scooped up and sold again, and it’s also an incredibly disgusting thing to do considering these baby turtles need food and this is a very important time in their life, and that they are wild animals, and critically endangered at that.

Apparently, this is true. It's not just to turtle, though. They do this to bird, crab, fish, and so on. Im from Thailand, so...yeah...it's a scam for all kinds of people, not just tourists. They tell people that by freeing them, you gain good karma, but in reality, these bird were either trained or captured later.
Some local even goes as far as giving you tortoise (They will act dumb and say they don't know the difference.)...and tell you to release them into the sea, which would kill them.
Now there's a local puppy and kitten scam in the city as well, fake beggar with puppies and kitten will make you feel bad and sympathy for them so you will buy the animal from them. When the next day come...they will have a brand new pet to scam you. It's a gang operation from Cambodia, Myanmar, and other neighborhood countries.

This is not smart, this is gonna over-exhaust the poor babies. they already have a lot to deal with and now yall just handle them back and forth throwing them around constantly for no reason but money. This species of turtles are also really endangered. These are living sentient beings, remember that.
