Many say that paradise does not exist on Earth. I however, beg to differ, as The Savoy is one such hotel which gives fruition to the fact that paradise does exist on Earth. Built in a English Gothic architecture, the hotel reminds you of the 1900s. And why not, because the hotel was built in 1902! This is a huge heritage hotel with acres of lawns and huge Deodar trees .Two of them are more than 300+years old.
The hotel has a lot of 1902 furniture still preserved, and the almirahs in the Suites are the same ones which were installed in the hotel in 1902.

The Savoy has a truly fascinating history. The first building at this site – high above the Mall – was Grant Lodge in the early 19th century. In 1849, the Reverend Robert Maddock started Mussoorie School at the premises of Grant Lodge. Later, after Maddock’s death in 1867, the school was taken over by the Board of Education of Calcutta University. In 1895, the estate was purchased by Cecil B. Lincoln, a barrister from Lucknow, who razed the school building and constructed a grand hotel, the biggest in Mussoorie, “…like a phoenix rising from the ashes of a school,” as described by a contemporary scribe. The Savoy, which opened in the summer of 1902, might have been named after Savoy Hotel in London or perhaps Savoy Palace in Ireland. In its heyday, it is said, the Savoy competed with Cecil Hotel in Shimla and Carlton’s Hotel in Lucknow.
The Princess of Wales (later Queen Mary) visited the Savoy in 1906. Soon after, Mussoorie was hit by an earthquake which left the hotel severely damaged. However, by 1907, it was up and running with 64 suites. Electricity came to Mussoorie in 1909 and the hotel got brightly lit.
In 1920, Jawaharlal Nehru stayed at the Savoy, accompanied by his ailing mother, wife and infant daughter (the future Mrs. Indira Gandhi). Other famous guests include the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama; Pearl S. Buck, the Nobel Prize winning author; Haile Selassie, the Emperor of Ethiopia; and Prince Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia. It was also favoured by ruling families of many Indian states, including the Wodeyars of Mysore and the Gaekwads of Baroda.
In 1946, Mr Lincoln sold the property to Rai Bahadur Kripa Ram Jauhar – it was subsequently inherited by his son Anand Kumar (“Nandu”) Jauhar. Post-independence, the Savoy hosted “… film stars, rogues, politicians, business tycoons, fly-by-night operators and some fast fading beauty queens!” as described by Ganesh Saili. A number of Bollywood movies were shot at the Savoy in that period.

Eventually, the Jauhar family sold the hotel to a Kanpur-based industrialist, from whom it was acquired by the ITC WelcomGroup in 2009. Beginning its new innings as Fortune The Savoy in 2014, the hotel had been upgraded to WelcomHotel The Savoy.

The hotel is conveniently located at the Library end of the Mall Road at Gandhi Chowk, around 32 km from Dehradun Railway Station and 55 km from Jolly Grant Airport. And, if you want to come by car, the property is about a 7 hours' drive from New Delhi.
