Americans experiencing 'tipping fatigue'

Tipping feels like a growing part of our daily life, and the numbers support this. According to the payroll processing firm Gusto, 6.5% of American retailers currently accept tips, which is nearly twice the amount recorded in 2019. Michael Lynn, a professor at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration, joins to discuss.

It’s an insult that when presented with the option, they no longer show 10%/15%/20%. Instead, they show 18%/20%/25%. So 15% is no longer customary. In fact, it’s seen as an insult. And when they say it’s due to inflation, no. The higher prices on the menus is inflation. If I’m paying $5 more for something, that 15% tip is now more money to the employee. And if they can’t live off 15% of inflated prices, then guess what? They quit. Pay your staff more if your want their service. Can’t afford it? Then maybe it’s time to close shop.

I’m done with tipping. I won’t tip for self service or for counter service. For sit down/waiter service I definitely will.

I dont care what people think of me. I do not tip at fast food places, or coffee shops where empolyees are making a full wage. I turn that tab around, or if i am forced to leave a tip i put .01 cents. And for resturants, hell no to 25 percent tips. Bad service means bad tips. I work hard for my money, and im not going to just give it away.

Tips should absolutely be taxed! And the tipping system should be abolished. It has no place in the 21st Century.

I immigrated here from Europe so I never felt any pressure to tip anyone. I found it insulting that anyone would expect to be paid more after I had already the agreed upon price for something. I do tip at sit down restaurants because I know they only get paid a couple of dollars an hour, but I believe a fair restaurant tip is $5 regardless of the cost of the meal.

The starting point is for Congress to eliminate the sub-minimum wage level in those industries where it applies. There is probably justification to raise the overall federal minimum wage as well.

Had the opposite effect for the majority of people I feel like, I personally will only tip bartenders/restaurants these days.. when it started showing up at places it was never “expected” before, which has been years, I stopped.

No one ever paid taxes on tips. The down side is if you actually live off tips, you have very little Social Security when you are old.

partial, hostile, distorted, partisan, prejudiced. Tipping is not to be expected it is reward for exceptional service

In most states, servers and some other tipped employees are paid just $3.95/hr! The justification for this is the tips they receive. Instead, ALL workers should be paid standard minimum wage, with NO tipping.

Always tipped the barber & hairstylist. Just got a new mattress delivered & they took the old one away. Tipped them, two guys, each $12. It’s an old house with butterfly stairs. It was a King.

If I’m paying and picking up at the register, I’m not tipping. I don’t add a tip on those stupid machines.

Also thanks to all this inflation, I’m eating out way less and rarely going to sit down restaurants now.
