I quit my job for a year to go home and spend time with family, got depressed and started drinking. Missed the work, missed the fellas, missed the challenge and sense of accomplishment. These guys are on a whole different level but damn it’s true, what you do becomes you and it kinda sucks.

I was never in the military, but after a work injury took me out of law enforcement and my private nuclear security contracting gig, I felt the exact same way you did. I didn't know how I was ever going to be "me" again. I never sought any help and it took me over 10 years to cope with it.

Please, if you are going through anything like this, get help! It doesn't make you weak or less of a man if you seek help. You're more of a man if you admit to having a problem and you get help to heal. I wish I did. It would have prevented a lot of hurt and lost friends if I found help instead of pushing everyone away and isolating.

Thank you for bringing attention to this. Your recovery is inspiring.

Damn this hits home…I had to get back in because I wasn’t happy out of the uniform…

And that's why we go to the Contracting/ Paramilitary sector often (notwithstanding the injury factors), there are few things that can fully replace that identity and lifestyle, but we're resilient beings, and can adapt to varying degrees.

Amen brother! Your career is not who you are. It’s a thing you do. People get lost in it way too often. That’s why they recruit Lost 18 year old kids.

Realize that your identity is a child of God. Everything else is just a temporary assignment.

When I didn’t have the Marine Corps anymore, I threw myself into school. I didn’t deal with the shit that he did, but it’s works. The challenge is finding that other thing that will drive you. It’s out there.
