Inside Story - Does world still need US for leadership?

This year's G20 summit of the world's major economies was a tense and sometimes frustrating gathering, exposing the United States isolation globally on the key issues of climate and trade.

World leaders deplored President Donald Trump for pulling out of the landmark Paris Accord, reaffirming their commitment to fight global warming, without the US.

Washington is now left in what some are calling a “club of one”.

Will the world continue to look to the US for leadership? If not, who will step into that role?

Presenter: Hazem Sika

Guests:

Marc Pierini - visiting scholar at Carnegie Europe and former EU ambassador to Turkey and Syria

Molly McKew - foreign policy expert and strategy consultant

Inderjeet Parmar - professor in international politics at City University London

Simple answer is no. The world never needed it, if the US had a competent, intelligent leader im sure plenty of nations would welcome us- the worlds biggest economy & military- as major player (even the biggest player) in international politics but with the man we have in power now theres no way anyone would accept or respect us, as we can see from what happened at the G20 summit.

Qatar is rich because of it's gas and oil which is bad for climate so for qatar to talk about climate change is laughable

No one finds it odd that a bunch of world leaders coming here to talk about agreements that we the public do not know anything about? Like Davos, the elitism in the world has gotten out of hand.

Being led by someone with their head deepest in the trough, no animal that wants to survive for long would do that, humanity has handed control to money .

america is doing what it's done forever, acting in it's own interest. the world followed america through the cold war period because america paid them with guaranteed safety of trade routes and access to the american market. in the climate today if you lead you end up getting flack for doing something (iraq, afghanistan, etc.) and you get just as much or more for not taking action (syria). let someone else be the figurehead of leading and america can go off following it's interests like every other country in the world has been able to do

When they say "who is going to fill the void?" They really mean "who is going to pay the money?"

We don't need America to instigate any more wars or regime changes, there's only so much this planet can handle. By by miss American Pie.

Clearly not. What's more however, the US has never really lead the world. It were the Lend-Lease debts subsequent the 2nd World War that made it seem so: every Nation in the world (including Germany, thanks to the Marshall Plan) owed America money. By the late 90s, Russia and England(sic) repaid their debts in full; result: the American (read: world) economy collapsed within 10 years, no longer able to outspend countries that were not working uphill to match them. America might like to claim it won two world wars, but it didn't. Proof: the Vietnam War, and every other war they have ever fought on their own. Instead, they lent people on both sides a lot of money, and then joined the winning side once it became obvious. " 'Lead the world': Ha! I scoff at your Cuban cigar, Mr.Fatboy. Hiroshima? You lead us wrong if you think we must follow your lead !"
