Newton's Gravitation Would Happen Instantly, Einstein's Gravity Isn’t Instant
Показать описание
The video explains that both light and gravity propagate at a finite speed—the speed of light. When we see the Sun, the light we observe is over 8 minutes old due to the distance light travels. The same is true for gravity: the gravitational pull Earth experiences from the Sun isn't instantaneous but travels at the speed of light.
Historically, Galileo attempted to measure the speed of light, but it wasn’t until 1676 that Ole Rømer successfully demonstrated that light had a finite speed. Newton, however, believed that gravity acted instantaneously, which later proved incorrect with Einstein's theory of General Relativity. According to Einstein, gravity is a curvature of spacetime, and gravitational effects propagate at the speed of light.
This was experimentally confirmed through gravitational wave detectors (like LIGO), which measure waves caused by cosmic events, such as the merging of black holes and neutron stars. A significant discovery in 2017 revealed that gravitational waves and light from a neutron star merger arrived almost simultaneously after 130 million years of travel, proving that the speed of gravity and light is nearly identical.
Thus, if the Sun disappeared, the last light and gravitational pull would reach Earth at the same time, after about 8 minutes. This confirms that gravity, like light, travels at a finite speed.
