I think you said your located in Portugal? Lisbon? Whats the cost of living there, compared to other large European cities like London, Paris, Berlin? These other cities are very expensive. In America, in NYC its very expensive. A smalk apartment, even a studio apt, may cost $3000 dollars a month.
