Making a Silver Underslide for a Violin Bow Frog

This is a demonstration of my technique for making a silver underslide for a violin, viola, cello, or bass frog. The silver is first rolled down in thickness on a Pepetools Rolling Mill to around .15mm thick, then cut to size on a Pepetools Guillotine Bench Shear. I heat the silver over an alcohol flame to remove any hardness from the silver that was introduced by rolling it thinner. To press the underslide into shape, I use a vintage hydraulic press, made for the dental industry and press the silver into a stiff urethane block. My underslide forms are unique to the model of bow that I am making and I have “standard” forms for violin and cello that I purchased. I also make the forms as needed from wood or metal when I make new underslides in restoration for older bows that vary in the width and angle of the mount of the frog to the stick.
Thanks for watching!
