Haha, I did this once when a tstat died on a super cold night. I got fancy though - not only did I have ON and OFF, I added a second switch for LOW and HIGH (2-stage furnace LOL)

You can add a "Temporary Construction Thermostat" in series with the wires to make it a preset manual thermostat. They are available for heat limit as well as cool limit. I use them to keep HVAC use to a practical level when having construction or remodeling done. Another option would be the Honeywell CT87N1001 (the old-style round thermostat)

OMG so this resurrected a distant memory. So a grandma of a friend of mine from back in grade school kinda did something like this for her AC, but with a spring-wound timer. I thought back then it was just the weirdest thing. I speculate now, she probably just wanted to manually control how long/often her AC ran (watching her energy consumption, fixed income retired etc). I could maybe see this on an evap cooler but hers was just a regular central split system, but (even back then) really old (and loud).

A basic dial or basic touch thermostat is good. Most techs like to upsell on the fancy ones

Off topic but, I have an issues where my inducer motor hums, does not kick on and got very hot. I took it in thinking the motor was shot but the repair shop connected power to it and it ran great. Is this an issue with the board?

Question wouldn’t this type of setup be running without stopping?

Because with a thermostat, it would reach a set temperature and shut down.

So I guess when the person feels that it’s comfortable they can shut it off themselves?

I think this would work for emergencies purposes if your thermostat goes bad an you live like far away from the first HVAC parts store.

You could use a SPDT switch and hook up both the heat and a/c.

I was trying to find a thermostat that had a 3 position switch to go fast from heat cool and furnace with a heat pump. The backup furnace always seemed to have menu. What is the fastest to go between the 3?

I hope you installed a simple dial or other basic mechanical thermostat for her. Rotate right for warmer, left for colder. My brother and I talked over installing a Nest thermostat for our parents, but realized they preferred the simplicity instead of the potential programmability with automatic setback and occupancy detection.

Single pole double throw switch with a center "off" position would allow both heat and cool options.

That is pretty funny and not even April 1st. You need two of those, one for heat 🥵, one for cool 🥶, 🤣 or put an old fashioned manual thermostat.
My programable thermostat has a manual setting. Set the temp and leave it alone. Lol

I hope you all are doing well it's been cold 🥶 here for a couple of days but its going to be in the upper sixties next week 😊..ive been helping my uncle do some carpentry work on his house he had some things he needed done but he isn't able to do anything he is the uncle i was telling you about that has stage four cancer he was doing chemo and the dr checked him out and saw that the chemo didn't do him any good just made him sicker but the dr is trying one more different type of chemo and if this one doesn't work then he probably won't be here for much longer but he is hoping this one works..I hope and pray it works.
