Welcome to our Romance Language Challenge, where we test the mutual intelligibility between Catalan and other Romance languages! If you're a speaker of French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish or any other Romance Language, let us know if you can understand what word is described in this mini-challenge. Whether you're a language enthusiast or just curious about how well speakers of Romance languages can understand each other, this challenge is for you!

Mutual intelligibility is the ability of speakers of different languages to understand each other without prior knowledge or special effort. In the case of Romance languages, mutual intelligibility exists to varying degrees due to their shared origin in Vulgar Latin and the influence of the Roman Empire.

Catalan is a Romance language spoken in Catalonia, Valencia, Balearic Islands, and the eastern part of Aragon in Spain, as well as in the Roussillon region of France and the city of Alghero in Sardinia, Italy. It is one of the official languages of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, and is also recognized as a co-official language in Valencia and the eastern part of Aragon.

Què són?
Són a la cara, per sobre dels ulls.
Són velloses i creixen en una línia una mica corba.
Es poden depilar o arreglar per estètica.
Poden comunicar emocions i expressions facials.
La forma pot variar segons la persona.
Són les celles.

What are they?
They are on the face, above the eyes.
They are hairy and grow in a slightly curved line.
They can be plucked or groomed for aesthetics.
They can convey emotions and facial expressions.
The shape may vary depending on the person.
They are eyebrows.

As an Italian I couldn't understand nothing about the first part, but when she said "depilar" and "comunicar emocions" I knew it was the eyebrows. Beautiful language ❤

Got it! As a Portuguese person it was intelligible enough for me to understand. Even our word for it ("sobrancelhas") is somewhat similar to the word in Catallan, "Celles."

Considering I thought it was a tram, until the "facial expressions" part threw me off, it turns out I can't

Yes! I understood 97% and the rest was easy to figure out given its similarities with "Español o Castellano" and the way it is written!

Got it! I speak Spanish natively and I’ve also studied French. I can usually understand Catalan, I just cannot speak it.

As a native Spanish speaker, I understood like 80% of it. Didnt understand what ulls, velloses, mica, corba, and depilar were.

I guess those who understand north Italy dialects could understand the most of it.

I understood some phrases completely and others not so much, based on 4 years of Spanish in high school 2 decades ago.

Lo sabía después la tercera pista - poder con ellos expresar los emociones faciales. Son las cejas. Catalán es muy similar a español, lo es casi cómo casubio y polaco.

I'm so sad that Catalan is getting increasingly ispanicised, wish we could get a southern galloromance unity of central and southern France, northwestern Italy, and Catalunya
