ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.

Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones — and $25,000 of debt — to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and — best of all — wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.

At 76 I joined AA. (I’m a slow bloomer). It’s one of the best choices I have ever made. I had a year and a half sober when my husband passed away after a long illness. AA saved my life. Now at 82, I have a vibrant life surrounded by loving friends. Well it’s vibrant on the outside. My apartment is in chaos.
I’m one of those misguided people who thinks that the more books I read on decluttering and the more tools I have for cleaning will actually do the job for me 🤦‍♀️
Your video reminded me that NIKE had it right: Just Do It ‼️
I think I will NOW ❤

As a crafter, one of the new Atomic Habits I've picked up is using what I have. I've been slowly working through my yarn stash and making things to donate to a local charity. I'm even using the small balls of leftover yarn to make fun scrap blankets!
I have a huge stash of embroidery floss even though I don't embroider, so I'm using it to crochet tiny creatures. It's fun trying to come up with things to make!

You are adorable, and we love you. I threw everything out, but now I'm struggling trying to turn my home into the feeling of entering a hotel room....sparkling clean, no junk. Everyday I find something to throw out, even if it's just an old toothbrush. That counts.

For the tea, I learned the same thing recently. I didn't want to use the bags I had because of plastics, but I don't want to waste them, and I don't want to spend any money buying tea gadgets, special teapots, etc. So I just cut the bags open and use the crushed tea leaves inside.
A basic small kitchen strainer works great! No tea bits in your cup!

Green tea: Pour the crushed leaves into any container (except plastic), add hot water and let it steep for a few minutes (you can put a small plate on top of the container to keep the heat in), then pour everything into your cup through a strainer.

Herbal or black tea: Just pour the crushed tea leaves right into a saucepan, add water and heat--it's ok to boil, then pour it into your cup through a strainer.

I just finished declutterring a cabinet. I had a bag full of crap that was just taking up space. 😅

Minimalism question about your bedroom: how do you live without a bedside table? I mean, I have my hand cream, glasses, perhaps a book I read before going to sleep, my phone… Do you just not have any of those kind of things by your side and keep them somewhere else? Meaning, you literally come to bed just to lay down and sleep?

I was one of those people for years who brought the mail in, let it pile up. Now, I take care of it right away. What a difference. 😊

Marissa, I like your academic approach to the topics!

I was really impressed that you studied Neuroscience. I am also studying Nerosicienc3 of Behaviour module now, so it spoke to me.

And I like your home, very cosy and liberating.❤

You look very good Marissa! I’ve been watching your old videos about decluttering because we are moving to a smaller place so my husband can do more school. Is so inspiring to see your videos, specially the one where you talk about selling items. I was a bit skeptical but decided to try, and I’ve sold sooo much already. Thank you. And you look as energetic as in those videos. Looks like you are more adapted to the change of country! ❤

I bought the book Atomic Habits ages ago but haven't got around to reading it. You've inspired (and reminded) me to pick it up and read it! I love your videos. Keep 'em coming! 😁

A good meal planning tip
*See what you have and make meals of that and only shop of a few ingredients your missing
*see what’s on sale that week and plan meals around those sales

I prefer the tea infusers that are cylinder and sit in your cup or in a pitcher. They’re soft of shaped like a metal cup. I use mine for a cup or a pot.

I didn’t know that about tea bags. I’m going to switch to loose tea as soon as I use up the tea I have. I hope you return the strainers and get your money back. I keep two manila envelopes going. One with the previous month’s receipts and one with the current month’s receipts in case I need to return anything. The next month I remove and toss the receipts from the oldest envelope and put the new month on the outside and so I always have two months worth of receipts. I just keep reusing the envelopes. I’ve saved money by returning items that didn’t work out.

I loved this video! It's full of really great actionable tips. I particularly liked how you combined tips on finance and decluttering, among others, because these are high on our list. All recommendations were clear, concisely summed up, and peppered with personal anecdotes that really help us connect with the content. Really loved it! We now use a "coffee" press with loose leaf teas to avoid nanoplastics. It works really well, just be sure to reserve it exclusively for tea.

Meal planning is one of the best things EVER. I started doing this when I was working full time. I'd get home, have nothing planned, nothing thawed...so we'd end up going out. Or eat the thing multiple times in one week. It gets expensive and you end up eating junk! Now I can't imagine NOT meal planning. And it's not like it's etched in stone, but it sure makes things easier.

I have that same tea strainer, except it's older than me (43 y.o.). My mom gave it to me when I moved out, and it does a good job at keeping the loose leaf tea inside it. There is some debris, but it's rarely noticeable in my opinion. I guess they don't make them like they used to!
