Even if you don't embrace Foucault, Madness and Civilization is an excellent history of the paternalism and male domination of psychotherapy.

Szasz did not ever identify himself as an "antipsychiatrist, " even if others do. His position was more nuanced than that.

There is so much more historical and present male domination embedded in the psychotherapeutic/ psychiatric industrial complex than is being discussed here.


Edit: yes, we are in a time where there IS critique! Have you ever heard of radical survivor-led organizations? Have you ever heard of the psychiatric survivor movement? Have you ever heard of (woman) Sherry Mead's intentional peer support? Peer respites and Soteria houses? Wow just wow. So silo-like here.

I clashed with a lesbian who was on psychiatric drugs during the Partners for Ethical Care conference in Austin. Most supporters of queer theory, trans theory, CRT, war in Ukraina, virology, biopsychiatry and more cannot be argued with because of these brain disabling drugs and anticholesterol drugs which are also brain disabling.

Overall this was a great discussion but im shocked and saddened to see ADHD and autism included in this. They are NOT mental illnesses and diagnosis is crucial for receiving needed support and accommodations. This shows a complete lack of knowledge of these conditions and how they affect women. Women suffer from being UNDER diagnosed and instead being misdiagnosed with for example personality disorder. There are clear biomarkers for neurodivergence, incredibly high hereditary rates, proved environmental causal factors in utero etc. They are highly comorbid with learning disabilities and genetic physical disabilities such as hEDS. Pushing the myth that ADHD and autism are synonymous with mental illnesses and do not in fact exist but are manifestations of womens oppression is incredibly damaging to ND women, on a par with 'vaccines cause autism.' Please research this area before making such blase pronouncements.
