air conditioner tonnage calculation : how to find air conditioner size

The size of your residential air conditioner unit is not obvious. To figure out the size of your current air conditioner, or to figure out what size air conditioner will replace your existing a/c unit, you need to crack the code.
On the outside condenser, there is a tag with the model number. That single model number contains much information about that unit including the size of the air conditioner in BTU's or British Thermal Units. When you divide the BTU's by 12,000, you arrive at the tons of cooling capacity for a particular air conditioner. or the The model number on the air conditioning unit holds a two digit even number which when divided by 12 will yield the tonnage or ac capacity in tons of cooling.
It's important to know this number before getting quotes for repairs or a replacement.

Does anyone know if there is a code that nameplate ratings have to be located outside of the unit? For example I am noticing hot tubs you have to unscrew six screws and remove the front cabinet panel in order to get out their paper stick-on very vague nameplate rating

Hello I have a question my house is 1560 sq ft, I have w3.5 ton Trane unit which is about 16 years old. My a/c tech said they do not make 1/2 size units anymore is that true? He wants to install a 3 ton unit I figured going lower and living in Texas the unit wouldn’t be able to keep up on those 100 degree days is that true? I thought he would recommend a 4 ton
