VFX Artists from CATS Attack! After Oscars Insult

The Visual Effects Society is hissing back at the Academy Awards, a day after Cats-costumed presenters James Corden and Rebel Wilson made an impurrtinent remark about the film’s widely panned VFX.

Before reading the nominees for Best Visual Effects, the duo said (trading lines), “As castmembers of the motion picture Cats, nobody more than us understands the importance …” then they added in unison, “of good visual effects!” The line drew laughs and applause.

But the Visual Effects Society wasn’t laughing at the in-joke Monday, saying in a statement that read in part, “The best visual effects in the world will not compensate for a story told badly.” OH SNAP!

We breakdown their full statement, and if they've got a point or if they're being cry babies for making nightmare fuel. Leave your thoughts down below!

I'm with the VFX team. As a videographer, I know how difficult it is to do editing. And they were just following the orders. So to get taken the piss out of their artistry, I can see why they got annoyed. Despite it being a joke.

Quality of VFX depends on many things, time allocated, technical limitations, vision, money and direction. VFX, when used correctly, can be amazing, many of us have worked on some of the best VFX out there. Many artists that worked on Cat's have also worked on other films and TV shows, some of which have won awards. I completely support the VFX society with their statement. We do deserve a lot more appreciation and respect.

VFX studios are always get the worst of it. Working on a brink of bankruptcy. Remember studio that did Life of Pi, as they got an Oscar the studio shut down

HOw did a franchise end after fifty years if it has only existed for 42? Is the man who said that a clown?

They should have just animated cats to the original Broadway cast recording.

I don't blame them for speaking up. VFX seems like a pretty thankless job. But then again it was just a joke and there's plenty of blame to go around.

Yeah, I don't think that it's the craftmanship of the VFX crew that is to blame, it's the whole design idea of the movie that was not appealing to the audience. When I saw that presentation I immediately put myself in the shoes of the CG artists who worked on the movie and I thought it was bad taste. I'm not someone who ask for self-censorhip when it comes to humor but I totaly see why some people can be upset; because it's not just a little mockery in an interview, it's live on the Oscars...

I wouldn't take notice of anything James Corden and Rebel Wilson do or say. Two absolute whoppers.

Uh, only saw the trailers but the vfx were fine to me. The effects def weren't why I didn't see the movie. There was absolutely nothing that could have been done to make me see this movie except paying me.

Cats is a terrible musical. VFX were the least of its problems.

Maybe I'm wrong in saying this but if they got paid and followed their direction by the producers and director then they shouldn't take it to heart. I know that can be hard, I've managed a place before doing 55-60 hour weeks, dedicating my soul to it to make it the best I could and it wasn't always appreciated. If they are proud of what they did and got paid, they should count that as a win. I won't watch Cats, personally even if it was great that's just not my kind of movie. Even more so now with all the horror stories buti have seen the trailers and various clips and I'm sorry to say it does look weird. Given that hair and fur are supposedly incredibly difficult to do in VFX from what I have heard/read. I read an article where Jason Derulo said people aren't sophisticated enough to appreciate their art. I found that kind of silly because from what I understand the acting was horrendous. I guess what I'm trying to say is the actors and director shouldn't be feeling too great but if VFX gave it their best under difficult circumstances then take the win and be happy that faced with an impossible task they did their best.

I saw Cats with my sister and I think this is definitely a so-bad-its-good kind of movie. Especially as fans of the original.

I never saw the movie and I know people hate it but look at the VFX. Hating the film shouldn't stop people from acknowledging those VFX. Regardless of whether or not you like the film you can't deny those VFX were amazing. Ground breaking even. Crazy how realistic they looked. But it probably didn't get nominated due to the flack it got and would look bad on the academy for nominating it even in a visual capacity. It's a shame. Blue stick people are considered groundbreaking but the most visually realistic humanoid cats ever made isn't? You gotta question the politics of film when one film does something just as good or maybe even better than another and doesn't get any credit for it. All because of whose name is attached to the film or whatever causing certain works to get overrated despite being unoriginal or bland or underrated despite being original and fresh and powerful. Not saying that Cats is some epic(I haven't seen it) but I don't need to in order to recognize the visual accomplishment there. The promotional material alone tells you.

Cats was horrible, feel bad for the actors

I have to agree with the VFX people. I imagine hours upon hours were spent on this film. Technically speaking it's impressive, it's the fundamental design of them that is all wrong and then the story, etc.

This flick was doomed from the start. Cats is a trash musical and Webber is EXTREMELY overrated. My condolences to the VFX team but you took the job guys... you took the job.

The Broadway show sucked, so how it gonna be a good movie? feel bad for the workers that had to work on a bad idea, but hey they needed that paycheck, just like the GM workers who worked on the chevy cruz in Lordstown. But that was the Dems bright idea., just like cats was. Don't bail out companies with bad ideas & poor design, cause it gonna go under eventually anyway. Market dictates the winners & losers, the market dictates success.

I honestly thought some of the vfx in cats was great, a lot of it was bad but the vfx was far from the worst aspect of cats
