My first road bike was a 1989 GS500. One of the greatest bikes I'd ever owned. Put over 100K miles on it without any major issues (Those engines may be archaic and slow, but they are pretty much indestructible). But everything is easy to work on, and the platform is super upgradable, so you can go out and make this a fast boi if you have the time. On the earlier gen models though, I'd definitely recommend investing in new or really good used suspension.

But yes, this is a great bike that's a ton of fun to ride. Plus, this is my first choice for a beginner bike.

I recently picked up a GS500 because I wanted to learn to ride again & didn't want to spend large amounts of money on something shiny & new that I might well drop. Well this little cheap, throw away bike had stolen my heart. It's got more than enough power, it's comfortable on long trips & CHEAP with great gas mileage. They're not perfect, the engine is noisy & takes forever to truly warm up, the suspension is soft so if you're tall or 200+ lbs the ride can wallow a bit. But apart from that I can see myself sticking with my GS500 for a lot longer than I'd planned.

For all those that are wondering whether this bike is good for beginners, just passed their test or returning to biking, the GS500 is used for Direct Access training in the UK. One week's intensive training then you take the test at the end. If you pass you can ride ANY size bike afterwards. That is what I did. I currently own a '97 GS. Squint Moto mentioned some vibration he could feel. That is because the engine is a direct mount to the frame and is also part of the frame. No rubber mountings to take up some of the vibration.

Just got a 01 for $1, 250 all stock. Only 9k miles on it. Only thing that needs to be fixed is carbs need to be cleaned up and leaky front fork. Sounded like a good deal to me. First bike too. Love the bike.

Just got one of these after a short hiatus from bikes. So far I'm liking it more than my old zx6r

Just moved into a new house that has 2 acres of woods and there is one of these abandoned in there. It’s in pretty rough shape but I may give it a shot and try to fix it up.

When I see your video I get nostalgia about the sound. Very well recorded sound.

I have a 02 GS500E, looks exactly the same as this one except stock exhaust, and I love it.

Pros:
LAMS
Good power, good low end power so for city driving you're not revving constantly
I'm pretty tall and it's still comfortable to ride
Cheap
Big fuel tank for touring, can get 350km out of a tank on long rides
Easy to fit luggage, built in tie down points
Cheap parts
Can work on it yourself
Seat easy to unlock
2 helmet locks easy to access
Space for a tool kit and few other items under seat
Sort the battery (see below) and super reliable
Lots of info online for trouble shooting
Dials and tacho easy to read
Mirrors are massive and give a great rear view
Frugal on fuel

Cons:
Gear lever you do have to lift your foot up a bit, can cause some pain under the knees because you're folding them up (for tall riders especially)
Stock battery can be pretty weak, especially in cold (0 degrees, which you get in winter in Melbourne and Tassie) and you will have trouble starting the bike. I replaced with a Motobatt AGM battery and haven't looked back
Hard to start in cold, takes a bit to warm up
Carbs can have problems, I had the needle valves replaced on mine because they were leaking
Brakes can be weak

Suzuki GS500 - like an old British bike that actually works when you kick-start it.

hello from newcastle, i brought a 04 gs500f with the fairings about 2 months ago, im on my l's.

the gs500 is a great bike, i did a lot of research before buying it and was torn between an older ninja 250 / zzr / gpx and the gs500, i got the gs500 because of the extra power, im a bit of a fat arse.

its got 55000 km/s on it and it runs like new, enough power to keep up with my friends ninja 300's even with the extra 70 odd kg's from me and the bike, it handles corners well, not to heavy for low speed manouvering and is pretty damn good on fuel i get about 4ish litres/100km.

All in all a nice bike.It dose handle very well and that front brake is very effective. They have plenty of cornering clearance. I have a video of me on one from the late 80's leaning it on my gotta really crank it to scrape anything. The 2 biggest faults of the GS500 are...1.Suzuki should have pony'd up and made a water cooled 500 like Kawasaki did.Could have had 55-60 hp. 2.That seat sucks!
