Hardware wins with sound every single time, software wins with proficiency every single time

Yes i definitely agree with you about hardware sounding really good. I use hardware in my production, the difference between the software, hardware is that hardware has a more open airy sound. Also the keyboards and machines have analog circuitry, which comes out the outputs and into the input which help power the sound.

Not only the sound quality the immediacy of hardware is unmatched!

When I first started producing I learned in an analog studio. Mackie boards with remotes running into ADAT machines. I love that sound mixing was easy as hell on that format, when I built my own and realized how much that equipment actually is it was cheaper to go digital. If I had a choice it would be hardware all day, but yeah nobody hears the difference anyway.

The conversion in the A/D D/A converters is the magic!!

Even the MPC software sounds different from other DAW's for some reason.

Ive been using Ableton for awhile now, it was a situation building a pc to run it the way I wanted. Went the round with different mixers and ways to plug in outside of just midi. Eventually, I came across the Delta 101 audio card, solved all my problems. Sounds great no matter what ins are being run. I agree though, something is to be said for the warmth of self sustained instruments.

Ain’t nothing like being able to turn that equipment on and start vibin, no computer distractions

MPC's is basically a computer/controller with a DAW like program inside it. It's all a mind thing cuz In the core of all standalone hardware equipment is a computer/operation system. The difference may lie in each tool's factory pre settings or template which can always be altered.

I remember making beats on a drum machine back in the day and I totally agree 100% with the points you made Bolo.

(Edit) I use Ableton nowadays, and yeah... if you don't use any of Ableton's built in effects like Drum Bus, etc., stuff comes out a little plastic and generic. That's where hardware emulation plug ins come in at.

You gotta a point, because when I used to compose in my Motif, it was easier, faster and the sound was "tighter." But now I used studio One and I use the Mix Fx on my bus to get that "analog" sound and feel

This is a topic I have been so interested in the last few weeks - I do want external hardware gear (500 series) which I know is a little different than what you're talking about here but same concept.

Thank you as always - and the Bolo Buff drum kit is 🔥💪

Nice vid, one of my favorite channels to watch. One thing to note is that many hardware synths and keyboards are made for live performances and they have to cut through a dense "live sound environment" like through other instruments, singers and crowd noise. For this reason, I think hardware keyboards are actually created to sit in a mix well. For me, I enjoy producing using synths and keyboards because it's fun and I like that I'm tracking with audio (not midi) which gets me closer to a finished song. Then on top of that, the tracks sounds closer to being mixed. Mind you, I'm running them through a DI box and some specialty preamps most of the time.

I realized that I wrote more and had more fun with music when all I had was a keyboard, bass, mixer and 4 track recorder. DAWs and Virtual instruments are great, but I get distracted by all the bells and whistles.

I will mention this also. If you can buy a summing mixer to run your sounds thru. I bought the dangerous summing box. The reverbs and fxs and the way things sit after running thru it sounds amazing.

You are 100% right.

My MPC 2500 & Fantom G have been collecting dust ever since I switched to the MPC Studio back in 2015.

But the MPC 2500/Fantom sounds so much better & was way easier to mix.

It’s time to get back to it.

About to look at some of these new Fantoms.
