Did you test any American D2 heat treated correctly to 62 HRC? The Chinese D2 is awful, but properly heated D2 has great edge retention.

14c28n is surprisingly solid, about on par if not better than the D2 blade I have, though in all fairness they were about the same price (~50 USD). That being said the steel isn't the entire story when it comes to price, there's the heat treatment, the grind, the width behind the edge, quality in components like bearings, etc. Sadly there are a lot of knives out for $200+ that are only marginally higher quality than $50-$100 offerings. There are some, but very few, that are sold at over $100 and are actually worth the money.

a big part of it is how hard it is to work the steel into the desired shape.
