En 1969 Havens abrió el Festival de Woodstock, aunque estaba programado que él fuera el quinto de la lista. Su actuación recibió contínuas ovaciones y continuó tocando bises hasta que se quedó sin canciones.

Richie meant very much to us in the '60s.  He was beautiful.  We were beautiful.  RIP, Brother.

Saw him a number of times in the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix in the early 70's. It was a rotating center stage setting. The performers had close contact with the first few rows of spectators. At one of his performances while taking a brief break some fans yelled out demands for their favorite songs. He ignored them until they quieted a bit. Then one young guy called out in a quiet and polite fashion, "Would you please play 'Handsome Johnny''"? He did so in a most heartfelt manner. Such a gentleman and wonderful talent....

Richie's entire career has been simply awesome. The man sings and performs from the bottom of his soul. Great talent, and wonderful rendition of this piece by Dylan.

You have always been so humble. I remember seeing you in a small venue and you were like 2 feet from me. I was mesmerized by your guitar playing. GOD BLESS YOU-PEACE my BROTHER

I didn't know he died, what a great loss. I grew up in NYC in the 60's and saw him preform often. Even the way he held his hand on the neck of his guitar was different and it was hard for me not to watch his hands as he played. Surely his passing is a great loss.

somehow by unlikely coincidence, we found a spot way way down by the stage, and who played is now a bit hazy. two that still stand out so vividly...solo John Sebastion whom wasn't even cognizant he was going to play until they pushed him out last minute, on the stage..., he established the wave of good vibes and was out of the blue fantastic. and then a fine gentleman by the name of Havens came on, sat down, and began weaving a hypnotic spell, playing ecstatically in open tunings, and singing like dionysus. i don't believe he played this song, but this has to be the definitive cut, sine qua non, of this amazing song. thank you so much!
