Filmed at café roux on the 16th September 2022, this is John Ellis and James Stewart, joined on percussion by Barry Van Zyl.

John Ellis
John Ellis is a singer-songwriter from Durban, South Africa. The principal member, guitar-player, vocalist and songwriter for the internationally renowned and award-winning band Tree63, he relocated back to his hometown from America after many years of international success to pursue a solo career. In 2010 he released his debut solo album, the politically-charged “Come Out Fighting”, which garnered him another SAMA nomination, and in 2011, in addition to his production work for other South African artists, he recorded his follow-up, an acoustic album entitled “Rural”, accompanied by Johnny Clegg drummer and percussionist extraordinaire Barry van Zyl.
John has recently released his fifth full-length studio album, Native, on 27 April 2022 after an extended absence from the music scene.
John is an accomplished guitarist, having featured on numerous American and British recordings, as well as on albums by South African artists such as Ernie Smith, Farryl Purkiss and Ard Matthews. John also lectures English literature, politics, communication, English as a second language and academic literacy.

James Stewart
Emmy nominated, Multi SAMA award-winning, chart topping singer/songwriter, producer and musical entrepreneur. Asked to describe himself, James Stewart offers simply: “musician”. Could he elaborate? He suggests “Couldn't I just hum it instead?”
As singer & songwriter for The Usual, James achieved fame with enduring National #1 classics like ‘The shape that I’m in’ and ‘Like a vision’ and a string of top 10 singles securing him a special place in the hearts and homes of music lovers throughout South Africa. His solo achievements include hits with ‘Shine’, ‘A Man like me’, ‘You don’t stop Turning me on’ and ‘Beautiful Mistake’.

Barry Van Zyl
Barry Van Zyl is an internationally recognised drummer who has performed on global stages for over three decades.
Since starting playing drums at 10, he graduated from the musicians institute of technology, Hollywood, California with an honours in performance.
He has lectured in the music departments of Cape Town University, Wits University JHB, and Pretoria Technikon. Barry joined the Johnny Clegg band in 1999 when musical director Andy Innes booked him for a tour to Germany. At the time he was touring in Europe with Oliver Mtikudzi's band "Mahube". He was a member of Johnny 's band right up until his death, touring extensively in Europe, North America, Asia and the UK.
More recently Barry has turned his insightful eye to the world of business leadership, while studying for an MBA at Henley Business School Barry began an ongoing relationship with the school developing new ways of approaching awareness, collaboration, creativity and innovation.
