This is what pushed him to make the decision. To go to college on the possibility that the NBA wouldn't work out must've been the same as giving up to that idea. Kobe must've known that to go to the NBA meant full belief in himself making it work and that college represented doubt in himself. He probably asked her as a kid, knowing she'd answer something honest to herself rather than someone who knew him and wanted to just echo his decision at the time
