Covering the four most common aspect ratios (there are others but these are the most common ones). Fast overview so you can understand what aspect ratio means and what you need to do about it, if anything. Mostly you don't need to do anything. To recap:

Telly: 4:3 (20th c) 16:9 (21st c)
Films: 1.85:1 or 2.39:1 (21:9 / Cinemascope)

This is the technique I always use... except the one time when I vidded these specific sources, actually. I don't know if it was a good or a bad idea but when I vidded Rodeohead, I tried out both scaling up Serenity and cropping Firefly and in both instances, I felt I lost too much from key scenes, even with pan & scan to re-center frames. Instead I picked an in-between aspect ratio which is totally insane and not something I'd ever do professionally but I did some dubious maths (with averaging the ratios and making sure the result was a multiple of 16) and decided that I was going to vid it at 2.03:1 which these days makes the vid 1920x944 (as I discovered when I remastered it a month or so ago). Crazy.
