Hey it’s Raj from 3CB.

Arsenal & Scotland LB Kieran Tierney missed nearly the last 6 weeks of the Premier League season with a left knee injury that required surgery.

Details were sparse until Kieran spoke with The Athletic this week. Firstly, he said he realized there was a problem with his left knee when he was back with the club following international break and while doing leg work, heard a click. After that, he felt something wasn’t right and imaging showed he needed a procedure.

This “click” and subsequent irritation is typically indicative of a meniscus tear.

Good news

Kieran further went on to say that his timeline is about 12 weeks which - if this is a meniscus tear - indicates he very likely had a meniscus repair where the surgeon stitches the tear back together. This is good news because meniscus repairs aren’t always a possibility - it depends on the type of tear and location of tear - but repairs have better outcomes than removing the tear (called a partial meniscectomy) since you’re preserving the tissue.

Further, Tierney says his rehab is going well and he’s on track to be back by the end of June and participate in Arsenal’s pre-season camp.

Root cause

Although the click happened during lower body strength training and Tierney felt good before that, meniscus tears rarely ever occur in isolation unless there’s some overt twist or contact of the knee. In this case, it’s very likely the meniscus was increasingly damaged and the leg workout was the final straw. That’s not uncommon & usually speaks to an overload in the knee over time.

I’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

Footballers who also play international DO NOT GET ENOUGH OFFSEASON. I’m surprised they don’t get hurt more.
