KNIFE SHARPENING TIPS BEGINNERS MUST KNOW 2 | HOW TO MAINTAIN AN ANGLE

This is my exact freehand knife sharpening method I use when I'm not filming. Note: In some of my older videos you may see me using a little bit different technique. Thats due to me filming, and trying not to block the camera.
Separating the knife sharpening movements, and using two different joints, or muscle groups to help maintain the blade angle goes a long way.
Some of these things I talk about in this video may seem simple and insignificant, however I believe they are extremely important in getting that hair whittling knife edge. Hope this video help!

I accidentally hit your video and I have to say you explain everything in simple and complete . I've subscribed because of the simplicity and common sense video.

Finally a video on knife sharpening telling you what you did wrong instead of leaving you with a dull knife, shattered promises, and broken dreams.

The tip of locking in wrist, elbow, and shoulder, then allow the torso to make the movement is a great tip which I am going to try. Having your workspace free of clutter around the stone most people would call common sense. But a good lesson taught. Important to to get into that habbit.

I just watched your video again. You give some good instructions for beginners and even make some good points for those who are experienced. I see quite a few people lift the blade off the stone at the end of a stroke and it will usually change the angle as it’s coming off the stone. You can actually tell that the angle changes from the sound it makes. The sound is something to listen for when sharpening anyway: a change in the sound will happen if you accidentally let your angle rise or fall. With experience you will be able to feel a sudden change in the angle and the sound confirms it.
Good video.

It's cool going back to see your old videos and seeing how much you've improved and found your style/voice today. I didn't even fully realize how much your videos today have a distinct style until I went back to the old videos, the style is so "transparent" I didn't even notice it was there

Really appreciate your going back to basics in a clear and concise manner. "Locking the angle" is the crucial info I was looking for. I can work with your directions!

This is literally the best well explained video on knife sharpening. I was wanting to get into it but everyone who makes videos on it explains it as if it's rocket science.

Excellent video! I’ve watched 100 sharpening videos on YouTube but after watching this one, I can see it is the best tips available out there. Thank you.

At last someone sharpening with the stone across the body and not pointing away. It is the way I was taught 50 years ago by a knife maker perfectionist. It is much easier to maintain an angle. Thanks

I've watched many sharpening tutorials. Honestly, the vast majority of which, would send into Noddy land. I mean 30 mins plus per knife and up to 5 stages of 220-10, 000 grit media - yeah, right! I'd rather spend the time chopping veggies and eating good food.
Anyway, by accident, I presume, I landed on your tutorials and have to say, for the first time every, I've managed to get my cheapo supermarket and expensive Japanese chef knife really sharp again.
I've been sharpening chisels for years and found that 220 and 400 usually did the trick. I have owned a double sided diamond plate 400/1000, just like the one you demo' in one of your other tutorials - never really used it much for the chisels - but following your guide, along with an old best strop I made years ago, I now have super sharp knives in no time.
Thank you for sharing! Very much obliged.

Really appreciate your videos! To the point, no fluff and simply practical. No need to qualify what your doing with comments such as "this may seem sill." It works, that pays the bill!

Probably the best tip on maintaining angle I've heard yet. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for these smart and easy tips. Too many of the videos of people "teaching" how to use stones are already good at it, and they go too fast for a beginner without stressing that as a beginner you need to SLOW DOWN, really take your time and think about every single stroke. One off angle stroke can ruin the work of the last 5 good strokes (or something). Like you, I started having better success with the stones when I started locking my arms and slowing way down.

This is the technique I picked up from your other videos . I am lucky . I'm ambidextrous so I can go in one direction with one hand and the other direction with the other hand . I've never been able to get knives really sharp till I used the turn at the waist technique, it's a game changer

Your vids have me pretty pumped about sharpening knives. I have a 8 inch henkel chef's knife that I got as a gift from my late grandfather about 15 years ago. I haven't taken very good care of it. I am pretty excited to get it back in the condition it should be in.
