It’s not trauma or an experience that seals it for villains. there’s that final nail in the coffin. the last straw. when you decide you’re tired of being the bigger person.

This is such a cool concept! Imagine the _implications, _ and potential plotlines, that this villain has lived through it all and the _agony_ at the sight of his naive, youthful self, knowing exactly what's in store for him and how it twists him...

Or that he's interfered with the timestream too much, and his younger self is starting to make different choices. And that the villain is proud of him for making better choices, but torn by the fact that the man he is will today cease to exist because of this.

My theory of the necklace. The necklace held a dark curse. The reason the lock is, well, locked, is because the curse got to him completely. It fully took over him. The future one tried to fight back, when he realised it was cursed, but the curse always overpowered him. So the future one eventually went along with it. The past one felt a dark presence in the future one. Realising something was controlling him, he then noticed the lock was locked. Knowing his was unlocked, he took it off before it could lock himself and take him over too. That's why the future one was so confused and he felt heartbroken, thinking "How come he gets to take it off and I don't? Why do I have to be cursed, but not him??"
