At an IHS Summer Seminar, ideas matter. Immerse yourself this summer.

Summer Seminars bring together graduate students and faculty to explore the nature of free society. Lectures, discussions, and evening socials lead to connections—intellectual and personal connections—that can last a lifetime.

In 2020, IHS will host five-day seminars in Washington, DC and Chapel Hill, NC.

The Classical Liberal Tradition
Washington, DC | June 16 – 21, 2020
An investigation of the full tradition and its approach to the free society, from the proto-liberalism of Locke and Montesquieu through Smith, Hayek, the Ostroms, and beyond.

Modern Challenges to Liberty
Chapel Hill, NC | July 7 – 12, 2020
How much equality is enough? What to make of the alt-right? What do we know about market and government failure? Reason through the major challenges to classical liberalism and refine your own views in response to these critiques.

The Institute for Humane Studies supports and partners with professors to promote the teaching and research of classical liberal ideas and to advance higher education’s core purpose of intellectual discovery and human progress.
