This view of course, doesn't seem to account for Galileo of Galilee, who lived around 350 years earlier, who busted the myth that the earth was the center of all celestial bodies.  

It wasn't until about 1984 that the Catholic Church forgave him for dispelling their meme within their profitable little fantasy.

I  couldn't  say  from  memory.  I  think  it  was   backstage  where  the  accident  happened  rather  than  in  an  actual  performance,   so  Houdini  was  possibly  off  his  guard.  The  case  bears  some  similarities  to  the  demise  of  Enrico  Caruso.  Both  men  might  have  survived  had  they  received  prompt  and  appropriate  medical  attention .
