#BeyondExplained
The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer is a highly capable and versatile surface combatant that has been the backbone of the United States Navy's destroyer fleet since the early 1990s. The U.S. Navy has a history of modernizing and upgrading its surface ships to extend their service lives and enhance their capabilities. The Arleigh Burke-class destroyers have undergone several upgrades since their introduction, including improvements in radar systems, combat systems, and missile defense capabilities. These upgrades help ensure that the vessels remain technologically advanced and capable of meeting evolving threats. The Navy may also develop and introduce new classes of destroyers or other types of vessels to address specific challenges. However, based on their track record and the ongoing investments in upgrades and production, it is likely that the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers will continue to be an integral part of naval operations for the foreseeable future.

On a side note, when admiral Burke was given a tour of his namesake he was asked if he'd have liked to have her in WW2. His response? "Son, if I'd had this ship there wouldn't have been a WW2 ".

Destroyer hulls take a beating, and are usually decommissioned after 20 to 30 years, as opposed to nuclear powered aircraft carriers, which usually last 50 years.

Their superiority warrants 50 years of upgrades and reconstructions. European and Asian designs were subsequently modeled on these ships. Even China wants to build ships like these.

As the Navy works to develop the means of reloading vertical launch cells while underway, existing platforms that lack that capability will be quickly phased out for configurations that favor that feature.

The television show The Last Ship could’ve used any class of warship in the U.S. Navy, but it fell on the Arleigh-Burke class destroyer. It is designed to fighting.

It is definitely a very capable and somewhat modular ship, but they are reaching their 25 year expected life span. That doesn't mean they can't be upgraded.
