Especially the language used in the scientific world is a problem that needs to be solved to make scientific publications more accessible. Liza Cornet, 34, lives and works in Amsterdam and has relatives in the region of Venlo. She has her own company in science communication after having worked as a scientist at different universities for ten years. She got her Phd in neurobiological aspects of antisocial behavior, which involved visiting prisons for several years. In her free time she used to design her own clothes and likes to read about personal growth, business and female leadership. She is also a keen runner and cyclist and practises yoga.

I fully agree that we need to re-learn how to communicate ideas and opinions with each other. Having differing opinions on a topic isn't a bad thing. We just need to be open minded and learn how to argue effectively without insulting each other.

It is excellent discussion, that we sometime do not aware about it. We just focus only one side at all.

Thanks a lot

Science communicators are a vital need as science gets increasingly complex. If we want lay persons to understand the world of science. Who can forget what Carl Sagan did to open the doors to the cosmos to Everyman and woman? And not just the scientific domain. How many papers on economics are easily readable by non-economists? So unless experts are comfortable with an audience limited to their peers, communicators are an essential component at a time of exponential advance of knowledge. An interesting talk, simply communicated 👏👏

The deliberate over use of jargon in many professions causes a disconnect. In science it is difficult to remove all scientific names and titles but the general literacy standards of scientists are not generally high. Communication skills are often sacrificed in preference for analytical skills. Cut jargon and increase communication skills, that will start to break down the disconnect between scientists and others.

i have to say that this is the first ted talk that I have to totally disagree with. Science hasnt got a problem with their language. In fact, science needs to use its language in a way that it cant be misinterpreted and scientists learn how to write a scientific paper that its clear and cant be misunderstood. Also, scientific papers are accessible. Not every single one, but many of them arent accessible for students or scientists neither. Scihub is for everyone accessible though. The problem are journalists that have 0 scientific background that interpret any data the way they want to make another headline. The amount of conspiracy theories and expansion of false information is the result.

Its really strange that a person wants to teach me about science communication but publishes papers in Dutch. Everything this person says or does, doesnt make sense to me. She is saying the most obvious stuff without understanding what it actually means and speaks it out in such a confusing way, she thinks its something inspirational or smart. This person seems to push their narrative to stay relevant without offering any real solution or support.
