Dear indie makeup brands...we need to talk. Today I talk about some things I wish indie brands were doing more of, or at all.
The lighting is a little off in this video because the sun couldn't decide whether to stick around or not.

As with photos, there are so many small influencers who can do amazing looks without needing to be paid a lot of money. There are plenty of people who would love to help out, it’s a matter of asking.

ICredentials? I will happily tell you what your credentials are. 1. You create stunning eyeshadow looks. You are amazing at makeup. 2. You have amassed almost 4000 subs at the time I type this, and that is a lot! With the amount of channels out there today it is easy to get lost, and yet you have carved yourself a niche that will continue to grow. 3. The fact that you question yourself is fantastic. It is the creators that take on a know-it-all attitude that I personally cannot watch. Good for you that you went ahead and made this video, because it was very interesting to me and I honestly wanted to hear what you had to say. This video was obviously well thought out and executed and you made a lot of really valid points.

love your comments about indie brands needing to have better testing and quality control! i'm not sure if you were talking about looxi beauty when you talked about the less than perfect product, but i actually bought multiple times from them over the last year and their shadows consistently crease on me when no other shadows i use do and i've even received some that were misformulated and still tacky. i struggle to wear the ones i own now, so i finally made a post about it on my makeup instagram to let other indie lovers know to watch out for that, and the brand owner responded to me telling me to try a different primer. :/ it just felt very unprofessional and a little bit condescending, as if i don't know how shadows are supposed to work or which primers to use with my shadows. i really hope that as consumers, we can continue to hold indie brands to high standards, because being indie doesn't mean that the quality can be less than perfect. mistakes happen, but consistent quality issues are unacceptable, even with indie brands.

i really wish Indie brands were creating more than eyeshadow and highlighter, i realize that complexion products etc can be more difficult but there are not a ton of Indie brands going beyond that currently. also I have seen a few Indie owners going off on social media and it is so unprofessional. great video!

Your so right about the reposting ... you have free publicity why are you missing out .. I always think maybe they don’t think the pictures are good enough.. but that’s not the case always 🤔

I’m black and I can’t tell u how annoying it is to see no arm swatches. I’ve left brands like menagerie and MUG messages even LOOXI BEAUTY and Terra Moons, we need more arm swatches and they IGNORE me 🤷🏽‍♀️ it’s like no one really want a our business, but love our money, yet no effort is made. I’m about to stop purchasing all together. Sheesh, I even volunteered MY arm...crickets*

I have a marketing of culture background and I keep seeing so many things that stand in the way of success or growth. I’m glad some videos are being made with free advice as a lot of brands could definitely use it.

The other part of so much of this is that online marketing is a huge, growing industry, which means that more and more students are looking for experience and internships. I have a very hard time believing that even the smallest brand can't find a community/local college student who wants a good reference and some portfolio building to manage/help with social media or even arms swatches. The sunk cost there is training the person for a short time, but for a small brand, that might be well worth it.

Agreed on the swatches and showcasing what the palette can do...Neve Cosmetics frustrates me immensely with their swatches vs how the shadows actually perform from the get go, I felt cheated lol. Love their other stuff but now I didnt trust any of their swatches anymore

100% everything you said! If I had to wait for swatches on deeper skin, I would never buy anything. I will never buy new releases, too many brands get one set of swatches out and that's not enough for my dollar. I don't mind waiting until the 2nd 3rd restock. LE, oh well I'll survive without it 😉

Oh i was hoping for a rant on how terrible some indie brands sites are with the product categories, swatches, etc. Theres SO MANY brands who have 0 swatches on their site and i refuse to buy from them on that alone. How hard is it to add that photo when you have them on IG?

JP immediately came to mind when you brought up arm swatches. Their recent Wahala release? The single arm swatch pic &the one pic of one light skinned guy &one woman of color? It was so odd imo! Of course I still bought the palette buuuut....WHAT? 😳😑🤔
