Community-based archaeology involves and accounts for the opinions and decisions of the local community at the site. Traditionally, archaeologists and the institutions they hail from (usually universities) plan, execute, and complete excavations of various sites without involving members of the community. Rice University and the Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site teamed up in order to change this at Varner-Hogg. Through an extensive collaborative effort with the local community, the site’s approach to public history, education, and archaeology has and will continue to become much more inclusive and incorporate the voices of descendants and other community members.
