RD 33 engines have a service life of 4000 hours, but due to increased thrust, RD93 engines which is a derivative of RD33, has a service life of only 2200 hours.
Whereas F404 has a service life of 6500 hours of flight.

The testing for a new Engine for Tejas Mk1a will delay the Whole program further by atleast 2/4 years....we really cant afford that.... Only way is to Pressure GE and US along with Making a Kaveri Derivative for the MK1a. Also we should replace the GE F414 with AMCA engine when its ready.

Best news is about AMCA partners. Government is trying to introduce a competition between HAL and private player. Whoever wins, will be good for India. This will accelerate AMCA program. This will also give kick in the back of ADA/HAL to get up from their sleep

Upgraded or not, the RD-33 is a shit design compared to US and European options.

Why are people STILL talking like you can just stick any engine in a plane? The LCA Tejas was designed around the F404. That means it could also take the F414, or you would have to design an engine e around similar size parameters with similar plumbing attachment points. Otherwise, you would have to at least partially, if not fully, redesign the jet around another engine.
