If I got it right, it is not the particle system that is triggering the sound. It just happens that in your project the particle system is triggered at the same time as the collision happens. There are many applications where this won't work. I'm working on a rail shooter where a spaceship fires laser shoots, which are in fact particles, I can't see how your approach would work in this situation.
