To those wondering this has a lot in common with the old neverwinter games.

While its touted as MMO and involves MMORPG style of grouping, it has an extensive "singleplayer" campaign in style of NWNI and II and it also has an extensive map creation tools for userbase to create their own campaigns.

I played and meta-gamed the fuck out of Baldur's Gate back when I was friggen 10 years old. I even did a hardcore play through of 1 -and- 2 (Restart the entire game if you die, no reloading. Gotta deal with everything, or restart the entire game) by the time I was 12.

Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment are the reasons I look at every so-called RPG that's out there right now and think "Why is this so goddamn easy?"

the times of playing super mario and dieing 50 billion times w/o reaching the end...EVER, are long gone my friend.
games used to get harder and harder to a point were you were losing hair when you were close to the next lvl, and game guides were mainly tips you and your friends shared.

Technically it's still a co-op multiplayer, since it seems like they'll be using instanced party areas anyway. It's basically as MMO as D3.

Yea, that's true too and I agree. I think what we see now is a temporary thing where there is over-focus on casual and simplified games because that market was previously unexploited and ripe for the picking. It will balance out over time - and in the long run many of people who played casual or simplified games will actually start to turn to more in-depth games as they "mature" as gamers wanting something more. I'm actually cautiously optimistic for the future.

I just want to point out real quick (because it got pretty much buried under so many responses) that I don't inherently dislike this game. I actually think it looks above average for its niche. My objection was primarily the forcing of a brand name on the game that intentionally discarded all of the "guts" of the game system associated with the brand - ie. D&D with not a single D&D mechanic present. That was the gist of the complaint before this spiraled out of control with negative feedback.

From everything I've seen and heard about this so far it seems like it will be as faithful to the original game series and the D&D mechanics as D&D online was ... ie. not at all. Then again, perhaps some people these days just have incredibly low standards for what they will consider a faithful adaption.

The fact that they made an MMO out of it should honestly be the first tip-off...

The Baldur's gate series were THE ultimate rpg experiences and my all time personal favourit game that has ever been released to a PC!

If they would only go back to that glorious way of making games, instead of spewing craploads of cartoony MMOs that don't make sense.

Less Action rpg games that are only about grinding gear (im looking at your way Diablo 3) and more of games that actually have an intricate story and game mechanics.

In other words I want BG3 :P

Hmmm, not sure if I am qualified to give a strictly "correct" answer on that one, but I don't think the different settings were ever restricted to a certain ruleset. Certainly there isn't anything really stopping you from playing forgotten realms with 4e.

I think its more of a case of certain settings being associated with certain rulesets simply because they often get "packaged" together as a way of setting somewhat of a baseline for a typical game.

Its not a primary concern for this game ;)

The game in it's early stages seemed to be quite promising.
It was apparently going to be an RPG with additional co-op until some Japanese company took over.

Outfits, dye color, faster mount, temporary stat boosts, low percent Exp boost...
Thats what you consider pay2win?
This stuff is cosmetics and small aid for your character to progress faster.
When it comes down to PVP and PVE its all skill based and gear based...gear which you earn by doing quests and getting as mob drop, not as cash shop purchase.
Honestly people these days throwing words like "Pay2win and clone of some other popular game" not thinking for one second what they are saying.

yep! the game is currently scheduled for a "late" 2012 release.

yeah I know, alot of people this days prefer graphics over story and gameplay which is kinda sad. because alot of old games are way way better than games today. and cod is not an exception to that. but what really makes cod is the multiplayer

First of all, its not wow-like. It has a free-target combat system.

Second of all, the game is very faithful to lore and the mechanics of 4th Ed DnD seem to be really well translated into the game. :)

Well, to be fair people don't expect turn based RPGs on a computer. They expect real time combat, which you just can't do with D&D's ruleset--in any incarnation. D&D 4e, at least, will be far easier to adapt than 3e's ruleset was.

"Perfect World announced that Neverwinter has shifted from the co-operative multiplayer game that was announced the previous year into a free-to-play MMO. "

Well fuck that. I hope it bombs.

I'm assuming you're a slightly older gamer such as myself, correct? I'd say your not wrong about simplified gameplay and instant gratification. What you're wrong about is the reasoning for it. Whats changed isn't player attention, but time spent gaming. Online gaming sessions have dropped from an average of 4-6 (07') hours per day too 1-3(10') hours. If you look at the years of those stats, you can see like the exact year this trend began.

This isnt what neverwinter used to be, it wasnt made up of big battles and bloodstained warriors, it was more subtle with epic storylines that were dark and gritty, with characters that were decisive and almost too real

One thing I don't trust IGN to be accurate with is reviews. At least from what I've seen they are completely different compared to everyone else

From seeing actual gameplay (Not this silly gameplay trailer, mind you) it looks kinda nice.
I guess I'll be checking it out.
AND PREPARE FOR THE EDITION WARS WITHIN THIS COMMENT SECTION.
