Who IS Birdo?!

Did you know one of the Mario franchise’s quirkiest characters has a deeper story than most people realize? Meet Birdo! She made her debut in the Japanese game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, where she was a boss. But when the game was rebranded as Super Mario Bros. 2 for Western audiences.
She’s an anthropomorphic dinosaur often mistaken for a bird, likely because of that snout that shoots eggs! Some early sources even identified her as a bird.
But here’s where things get interesting. In the original game manual, it was said that Birdo “thinks he's a girl and likes to be called Birdetta.” This makes her one of the first Transgender characters in gaming history! While Nintendo has softened this detail over the years, it remains a huge part of her legacy.
Birdo’s iconic pink look, red bow, and unique personality have made her a fan favorite. She’s since appeared in Mario Kart, Mario Party, and even Mario Tennis, often alongside Yoshi, leading fans to speculate about their relationship.
