Treadmill Torture to Trend: Fitness Machine's Brutal Story
Have you ever felt like your workout on the treadmill was a form of torture? Well, you're onto something. The treadmill wasn't created for gym-goers chasing that summer body but rather as a form of punishment. Sir William Cubitt, an English civil engineer, was the man behind this cruel invention. Cubitt noticed idle prisoners and decided to put them to work. He designed a large, intimidating machine called the 'tread wheel'. Prisoners had to step on the 24 spokes of a large paddle wheel. As the wheel turned, the prisoners were forced to keep stepping up or face falling off like an exhausting, never-ending staircase. This brutal punishment wasn't just physical torment but also mental, as the device generated absolutely no results. The prisoners literally powered a 'grind to nowhere', a futile, monotonous task designed to break their spirits. It wasn't until the 1950s that treadmills were reinvented for health benefits.
