Some early cases came from a missionary group which lived and ate in thatched residences in NW Nigeria, the village of Lassa. Rats were in the ceilings, and dust contaminated with their urine and dropings spread the disease. The US Public Health Service and ohter organizations had part of a UK Methodist hospital in Kenema in Sierra Leone, before the civil war there.
