Justin, ships in Mass Effect can travel faster than light on their own, but they need Mass Relays to cover large distances in reasonable amount of time.
PS. Mass Effect feels more like star trek, than star wars, in my opinion.

I loved how they said when they were making the 3rd game that they came to the realization that any or possibly every character in the story could be dead going into that game and how they had to come up with contingencies to keep the story going.

They were really ahead of their time and I'm glad other games are following their lead
