I saw them in a small and lovely venue in 1977 and they closed with an encore of this song. It rocked and left me stunned.

Bring it back to Frisco! Novato is too far away & it's not easy to get back to SF from Mill Valley in the middle of the night too. The Chapel, FILLMORE, Great American Music Hall, Independent, Café du Norde - I think I've heard, talked with (& seen) THE GP at most of these & more. It's time again.

Another version of a great song! Graham makes it his own which is a great tribute to the songwriter.

Graham Parker took this song and made it completely his!

Graham did his version because he LOVED the original. So, I don't understand who's say Jackson 5 original is a mediocre song. Really.

The studio version never appeared on "The Real Macaw." When Arista released the CD version of Macaw, they included a live version as a bonus track. "I Want You Back" was part of a 4-song EP that was released in the UK. It was also released as a single in the US.

This was only available as a B side to his "Mercury Poisoning" single with a mail in offer.

I cover this version with my band. Goes over really well.

It was always a thing whenever a STIFF artist covered a song, it became a requisite to make it better (or as they said to "cut" the original). Why bother playing someone else's music? In this case, GP and the Rumor are on fire. It becomes what so many GP songs are, a soul-searing slab of r & b that percolates to operatic intensity. Very well done!

Good funky song, but the parrot and the album title take the cake

Some mind numbingly stupid comments here. Just enjoy it. It rocks.

The lyrics in this version are messed up lol. The second verse especially doesn't even make sense. "Tried to live without your love one of those sleepless nights, but that just shows you, girl, that I know wrong from right. Every street you walk down, I leave tear stains on the ground. Following you, girl, I can feel you all around." vs "Trying to live without you love is one long sleepless night. Let me show you, girl, that I know wrong from right. Every street you walk on, I leave tear stains on the ground. Following the girl I didn't even want around."

You're right, it's an approach to the song's story from a more mature perspective.. a moody early 80s Nick Lowe-y perspective (:

How about this
The Jackson version is Great
The Graham Parker is Great

Why compare? It’s so divisive and boring

So much for Michael Jackson's sissy version. Graham Parker destroys the King of Pop on this song. Listen to Parker's voice...he even has more hip soul when he sings.
