I have struggled over two weeks to find a solution to updating hook objects using set state in a efficient, streamlined, and understandable approach. Unfortunately, React and Stack Overflow do not have and article or posts that addresses this, which is surprising as me as a new person to coding would be suffering in trying to find out how to deal with this. Takeaway: when using an object as your state, you have to merge the old object and the new object when setting state if you’re replacing the old object with a new object.
If using the version of setState that provides the old value that shouldn’t require merging so always use the setState that gives you oldValue
