Remember me and us when you become big

People like to show us clips of Ronaldinho dribbling through a defensive block, but not the hundreds of times that he got tackled and lost the possession.

But its not only wingers, is it?

Zidane, Luis Suarez, Ballack, Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets, Kroos, Modric, Riquelme, Cafu, Zanetti, Muller, Roberto Carlos, Messi, Ronaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kahn, Lampard, Rooney, Gerrard, Terry, Cannavaro, Maldini, Puyol, Figo, Drogba...

These are some names that you see and feel something. They had something that is lacking nowadays. Magic you may call it.

Football is turning more and more into a machine and less a form of art. When was the last time a player teared you up while performing a feat so unbelievable you could not contain your emotions? For me, the most recent player to have reached that would be Messi. A man who will turn 40 not that long from now. Modern football is more about money and results than it is passion, magic, heart. Its not only wingers, its everything.

The way the traditional number 10 role went extinct, that's what's going to happen to wingers. They'll occupy their positions alright, but just like we have seen the last of Ozil-type players, the magic of wingers will wane a die out. Every time Saka or Martinelli get the ball, they get doubled instantly.

Look at Sancho and Anthony. 2 brilliant players who thrive in a system where they can express themselves with speed and flair, suddenly reduced to nothing in the premier league. Great players, but the last of a dying breed.

watch out for Doku, another real winger

The "English" destroyed wingers with one word "Showboating"...not defense systems, they noticed that they could not dribble and yes I mean dribble in the truest sense of the word thus shame and ridiculed it so they can still be regarded relevant in their old money leagues purporting to be the best simply based on that...I mean surely I stand corrected but look at their national team I don't think it will win any trophy any time soon...truly a culture of assimilation

Jeremy Doku proudly wearing the superhero cape of Ronaldinho and capable real wingers, replacing "so called winger" Grealish.
Blud got a bright future I can envision

Wingers have different roles and responsibilities in modern tactics too, like Pep’s team doesn’t require showboaters but more controlled players to keep possession and use smart positioning

It kinda sucks that Son is always forgotten about when talking about attacking players .

I kinda disagree with what you're saying. I would argue that modern football is more militarized and hence scripted attacks are the most common ways that teams score goals, this means that manages get players who do what they're told more often and less often the skillful winger who does what comes to him at the moment. All the "real wingers" you mentioned play in systems that suit them. Leao plays for a team which primarily counter attack, madrid and Napoli are heavily relational and hence attackers who are just good attackers thrive in that system etc. But in general teams care about sticking to the script or the tactic which often results in wingers having to be very efficient when they get the ball. Often "efficiency" is boring

players haven't changed, coaches don't discourage real wingers ( every team wants a saka, a vinicius, a kvara) .. they are very well needed .. they just need to be of the highest level to be able to play as a winger in modern football and THEY ARE NOT MANY WHO CAN DO IT.. SO yes real wingers are dying and we have very few quality wingers you cant name 10 ... and when we say that is because we are sad and not nostalgic or sentimental ...

When wingers had one aim and that was to beat his man and get to the byline and get the cross in...that's when wingers were great to watch.

good left wingers

1. Neymar (he is still playing)
2. Mitoma
3. Doku
4. Luis Diaz
5. Kvaratskhelia
6. Vinicious
7. Leao

if we take out Neymar the only left winger in his level is Mitoma the rest have awful decision making or are straight up not that good at dribbling

good right wingers in the year 2023

Saka and nobody else, maybe also Takefusa Kubo maybe argentina will produce the new Argentine 10 model 3.0 in the next 4 years, Brazil has a really good left footed prospect tho he is called Estevao, really good dribbling but not that good decision making, he is just 17 tho

Sadio Mane is a traditional winger..

Salah isnt. This is why he struggle in games like Leeds, Forest those are the games Mane step up in.

Mané's first instinct to cross in the ball into the box.

Watch Diaz, Salah they'd rather shoot.

Doku is a winger,

Sane isn’t a winger.

i actually think that are the same amount of good wingers and it actually might be one of the position who didnt changed that much in the last decade, cb, cm, fullbacks and strikers seem to evolve way much more than the winger position, when the classick 10 almost extinct(no more players like platini or del piero or even kaka), but wingers are still pretty simillar(we more examples like chiesa or saint maximin and solomon who are pretty classic wingers)

I wouldn’t say it’s because of better defenses, I blame the coaches entirely for discouraging young players from dribbling. Everyone wants one touch ball.
