‘Work at the same time on sky, water, branches, ground, keeping everything going on an equal basis... Don't be afraid of putting on colour... Paint generously and unhesitatingly, for it is best not to lose the first impression.’
— Camille Pissarro.

On July 10th, 1830, Camille Pissarro was born in Saint Thomas.

Inspired by Corot, he rejected academic art in favour of light, time, and season—hallmarks of Impressionism. A founding figure, he exhibited in all nine Impressionist shows and later explored pointillism. Known for painting everyday people for elite audiences, Pissarro was also a generous teacher—mentoring artists like Cézanne and even Van Gogh.

To mark his birthday, we spotlight 'Rising Path, near Pontoise' (1876), from the Paris Collection of the A. G. Leventis Gallery.
